A Spanish comedy-drama film directed by Carlos Saura and written by Eduardo Mendoza. It is widely considered to be one of the most important films in the history of Spanish cinema. This film was nominated for a BAFTA Award for Best Foreign Language Film and won a Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film. The soundtrack, composed by Pino Donaggio, has been adapted into a musical production that has been staged numerous times. The snooty food critic Eliseo Tenorio is thrown out as the new manager as his restaurant's unexpected success swamps him with publicity and customers. In a fit of rage, he writes a scathing review taking the restaurant's owners to task. To his surprise, they invite him to dinner and offer him a chance to redeem himself by joining their team as an apprentice. His first assignment is to create an innovative pizza topping with Mario, the restaurant's chef. Eliseo sneers at all Mario's suggestions, but happily eats the pizza which they agree on as being delicious. A romance begins between Eliseo and Lucía who works in publicity for the restaurant. Mario has two children from a previous marriage who live with his wife Liliana until she leaves him for another man. The children are neglected as Mario takes on greater responsibilities at the restaurant. Mario comes to regard Eliseo as a surrogate son and they work together to create new dishes that become very popular with diners. Eliseo is charged with a crime he did not commit, for which he may spend years in jail. The police interrogation is headed by a young female officer who has been one of his most avid fans until she discovered he was cheating her with younger women; she now desires revenge. Eliseo summons Lucía and makes her promise to marry him if he manages to survive this ordeal (he figures will be the case). Mario is also arrested, and he is similarly touched by Lucía's devotion to him. Other than the elusive "Mario" (who was blamed for many of the kitchen crimes), Eliseo is the only one left who has not been detained for questioning about the kitchen crimes. Mario's lawyer visits him in prison and informs that Mario will be released under house arrest to await further interrogation. Mario refuses to accept his fate, however, so he starts a hunger strike until investigators confess their "mistake." Eliseo escapes from jail with Lucía's help. He is confronted by the police and his ex-girlfriend, who wants to know if Eliseo has an alibi for the night he was arrested. Eliseo replies that he didn't have an alibi because he was with Lucía at the time. The police arrest her and place her in a taxi. Eliseo and Lucía run across a breathtaking vista and kiss passionately as they both believe they will soon be married. With the police back on their trail, however, they decide to flee together to Venezuela instead of reuniting in Italy as planned. On their way, they stop at a restaurant where Eliseo wishes to pay his respects to Mario, but notices that Mario is no longer there. cfa1e77820
