A new version of the Adwind RAT has been cracked, allowing anyone to use the software for any purpose. The Adwind Remote Administration Tool is a malware program that can steal files, photos, audio, or video from an infected device. It also can steal passwords to web services like Facebook and Gmail. This version of the program was being sold on the internet for $500 in December 2016 when it was discovered that an earlier version of Adwind caused more than 300 million devices in over 60 countries to upload sensitive information to command and control servers controlled by hackers. The security researcher who found this vulnerability estimated that these combined actions stole up to $1 billion per year from victims primarily in Brazil and India. Despite these impacts, Little Snitch had only reported the vulnerability to the manufacturer in September. The vulnerability was exploited by members of hacking group Team Rogue Security, who revealed they were able to upload malware on at least 1,000 insecure devices over a 24-hour period after installing the Adwind RAT software through a phishing campaign. The hackers stated that they were able to use the malware to spy on banks and banks' customers via their smartphones. The operation was said to be the first large-scale application of the super-insecure Android flaw. Little Snitch patched this vulnerability (CVE-2016-5195) in Little Snitch 4.1.1, released in October 2016; its developers reported that they had already begun privately warning affected companies about the vulnerability for several weeks before that, and that many were still slow to respond. Because of this vulnerability, Adwind RAT (Remote Administration Tool) version 3.0 has been cracked so that anyone can use it for free for any purpose. The cracking team posted the following message on their website: "Adwind 3.0 full cracked is available! This release includes many bug fixes and improvements. This release is free for academic use." The Adwind RAT software, which is relatively easy to acquire and use, has gained popularity in recent years; by 2015, it could be found on hacker websites and forums. It was even offered to customers of hacking group TeamViewer. The software can be easily installed by a phishing email that tricks victims into installing the malware in their Android device in order to steal information from it. The RAT allows users to view the location of infected devices on Google Maps, remotely take photos and videos with device cameras, make phone calls or send messages from devices, and delete or modify files on the phone. RAT can also monitor the device's microphone and monitor SMS messages.
